Despicable Me 2

*voices of : Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt
Director : Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud

Tagline : When the world needed a hero, they called a villain.

Despicable me 1 was the one of the first animation movies I saw, and I loved it. So I hv emotional attachment to the series and despite being a little underwhelmed by this one, I still quite liked parts of it. The film is not as funny or doesn’t have that great a story line liked the first one. Seems they are only trying to cash in the franchise part here. Yet, I don’t mind seeing Gru and his cute little minions on the screen. Minions I also must say are the funniest part of the movie. They are just hilarious.. watch it with family for a decent time pass.

World War Z

*ing : Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz
Director : Marc Forster

Tagline : Remember Philly

I was really excited about seeing this movie, but left underwhelmed. I thought the acting was lackluster, the story very linear and predictable, with no interesting plot twists or great moments of revelation.

This role didn't suit Brad Pitt - I'm too big a fan of his to say he was poor, but I found his character quite shallow and unengaging. I couldn't provide a detailed description of his character if I had to. Everything worked out for him conveniently throughout, and of course he is the one who saves the day - without too great an effort of problem solving either.

Overall, the movie wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't great either. Wouldn't recommend for those who value a solid storyline over all else.

Shudh Desi Romance

*ing : Sushant Singh Rajput, Vaani Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra
Director : Maneesh Sharma

Tagline :

How much you will like or not like Shuddh Desi Romance largely depends on which side you are? Marriage or no marriage. I am not going to take any side because it's a movie not documentary. There are crazy characters and crazier situations. Beautifully filmed completely in Pink city Jaipur, written with fire-cracking dialogs, narrated smoothly however not consistently and acted strongly by Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Rishi Kapoor. Vani Kapoor comes just good enough in her short role. Sushant is charming and gains your sympathy despite being insane. Parineeti gains the points on being spontaneous and emotionally cracking.

I think most of them miss the point of the film.
Manish Sharma has directed movies like Band Baaja Baraat and Ladies Vs Ricky Behl. Both movies show strong, independent women taking charge of their lives. These women know what they want and aren't shy about saying so. I think it's a very good idea to show this type of woman in a movie, particularly a romantic movie. The traditional Bollywood movie where the boy is the aggressor and wins the girl is fine, but this is a different approach. Notice also that it begins with a wedding rather than ending with a wedding, and that the parents of both the boy and girl are nowhere to be seen. I think the message of the movie: Romance in the modern era does not necessarily have to end in marriage. Marriage (particularly in India, I would think) carries a lot of cultural baggage, not not everyone is ready for that.

As for the movie itself, I thought Parineeti did an absolutely terrific job. I'm not sure how she could have been better. I look forward to seeing her in many more movies, and I hope she makes good choices. Vaani Kapoor was like a breath of fresh air. Very pretty and ever smiling. She stole the heart and scenes she was in. Sushant Singh Rajput had a very difficult part—he had to look surprised, bewildered, and in love, a hard combination to keep up. But he did a good job, and never went over the top and kept it realistic. Bollywood movies often go into pure silliness towards the end, and although this had the cute marriage scene that could have been completely ridiculous, the director kept it within limits.

Rishi Kapoor is excellent and hilarious. Movie travels smoothly until its last half an hour struggles to wrap up the things and conclusion does not come shining enough. Love it or hate it but you won't be able to ignore it.

Bhag Milkha Bhag

*ing : Farhan Akhtar, Sonam, Pawan Malhota
Director : Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Tagline : Now you will see his Real Story.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is based on the life story of the most iconic Indian track and field athlete,Milkha Singh. It covers his journey from the villages of Multan to Helsinki,Melbourne,Paris and finally culminates in Lahore.Throughout the journey,we are introduced to the experiences that make him climb the top of the ladder, with a few stumbles in between.
As said, the film chronicles the journey of the man, Milkha Singh but its more about his life than the sportsman. A man overcoming his past and ghosts of partition and how he becomes a legendary athlete of country. If half of the things shown in the film shown is true, the man had an outstanding journey.
Kudos to Farhan Akhtar for delivering Milkha Singh to us! His is an absolutely brilliant performance. He has clearly put in massive effort to get it right. From the physical development, to the running style, the look, the accent, the Punjabi language, the dancing.. Everything. And he delivers well on all of these. Clearly, he seems to be the perfect fit for this role.
Bt somewhere I felt film became too long and there were unnecessary plot which cud hv been edited out, specially the whole sonam part. And there’s just too much info or director tries to cram too much in the movie. Also, part of it felt jingoistic and contriving. Having said that, I fully enjoyed the movie.
Sure a word abt music, Shankar- ehsaan- Loy hv not been at their best in last couple of years bt this movie has some great track. The title song being my most favorite of the year so far. The song is soo powerful, I feel ashamed doing nothing while listening to it. I feel I shud be doing something, running, working or being part of anything. The song has soo much energy and positivity to it.

The Accidnetal Apprentice (Book)

*Written By : Vikas Swaroop

The thing which I write after I finish a book, “finished a book after long time” ! :) .. the accidental apprentice is written by Vikas Swaroop, the man who wrote very famous Q n A which was later turned into a very successful and popular movie, “Slumdog Millionaire”. The accidental apprentice has pretty much similar formula to the writing. An ordinary man (women this time) caught up in extraordinary circumstances and how she gets herself out of the situation. The whole book was was good, it was pacy, gripping and had a mystery to it. The subject was interesting as well as entertaining. But the climax was such a let down. The whole buildup ended up being such a sham coz of a lame climax and I felt utterly cheated and reading it.
A bad book hurts more than a bad movie. A movie takes 2 hours and you may or may not invest emotionally in the characters but a bad book always saps you. Invariably you end up investing in the characters and it surely takes much more than 2 hours to finish any book.
Heavily disappointed by the ending, or else wud hv been a good read.

Moonrise Kingdom

*ing : Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis , Edward Norton, Bill Murray , Tilda Swinton
Director : Wes Anderson

Tagline :

What I like most about Moonrise Kingdom is that this story of love is told from the children's own perspective. Sure, there are adults in this world but it is the kids themselves who are the centre of the story which I'm sure was Wes Anderson's intention. It's the inner world of the kids that the movie explores whereas the inner world of adults is mostly ignored. We do learn about the adults from their actions but we learn much more about the children and the topography of their lives and emotions. One adult isn't even given a name and is simply known as 'social services' - played by the marvelous Tilda Swinton.

This reversal also suits Anderson's style. Whimsy and fantasy are features of his writing and directing and they've never been more appropriate.

It's a wonderful film that will make many adults reminisce about their own 'Moonrise Kingdoms' that they may once have known.

Take this Waltz

*ing : Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman
Director : Sarah Polley

Tagline :

Take This Waltz" tells the story of Margot a chronically depressed woman who is in a nice, stable marriage to Lou, a nice, stable guy. Margot meets, by chance, Daniel, a man who is slimmer, poorer, more artistic, and more conventionally handsome than her nice, stable husband. Don promises Margot hot experiences in bed. Margot leaves Lou for Dan.

In a montage sequence, Margot is shown having hot encounters with Dan, including three ways. Then Margot is shown being, again, chronically depressed. Margot implies that she regrets leaving Lou.

And that's it. That's the whole movie. It's not funny; it's not smart; it's not wonderful to look at. And then there is too much unnecessary nudity in the film too much. The ending is pessimistic.
Only thing I liked was performance of Michelle Williams. She’s a great actress and then there is something abt her face and body language ppl do get drawn towards her.

Lost (Season 6)

*ing : Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Evangeline Lilly, Evangeline Lilly, Naveen Andrews, Josh Holloway, Terry O'Quinn
Created by :J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber, Damon Lindelof

Tagline : On this island, survival is not a game.

The finale to "Lost" failed on many levels, and not just because it did not answer questions. It was poor writing that was an emotionally manipulative, contrived, and done-before piece. I got it. I saw the different alternatives integrated into the characters' memories. I saw the after-life reunion that would bind them all together in eternity. But, the finale served to diminish the integrity of the entire series because SO MANY small questions were left unresolved.

I think the writers created mysteries and twists as they went along with no clearly defined answers or resolutions in their own heads when they created those mysteries. That is just plain lazy and sloppy writing. The "Lost" writers ended the series with some absurd and puerile after-life reunion, rendering all the possibilities regarding what was "real" a total unexplained mess.

So... whether they all died in the plane crash, or whether the island experience really happened, or whether they all lived out their lives in an alternate universe where the plane never crashed, or whether all possibilities happened in some Quantum physics world and all the options were integrated into their memories.... nothing was explained in terms of the events WE WATCHED for years on the island.

The whole ending was a major cop out because the writers kept building mystery after mystery, twist after twist, cliffhanger after cliffhanger, and they never tied anything up with clear explanations in the finale. The ending was terrible. They went for the manipulative tearjerker.
Overall, I was quite disappointed with the show and specially the finale part. Yet, I wud admire the storytelling in the series. How they built, characters , the back story, future story, conflicts, issues and everything. Such a shame it had to end like this.

Man on a Ledge

*ing : Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell
Director : Asger Leth

Tagline : You can only push an innocent man so far.

MAN on a LEDGE has the appearance of a pretty standard unlikely sensationalistic adrenaline-thriller. The plot has its share of holes and stretches, and the ending's a bit much. Still, the acting and cinematography are quite good, and the film is immediately arresting, includes a few good surprises, and keeps your attention throughout. An especially fine performance by Elizabeth Banks as police psychologist Lydia Mercer.

MAN on a LEDGE would have been enhanced by more in the way of character development, especially in the relationship(s) between Nick, Joey, and Angie. Also, millionaire con-man David Englander is a bit too obvious a scumbag from the start. A little more finesse on this character, allowing him to creep up on us, would have been a plus.
Yet, a decent timepass I d say.

Lootera

*ing : Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Adil Hussain
Director : Vikramaditya Motwane

Tagline :

Lootera" is a lovingly crafted rarity; a big budget Bollywood offering that makes no compromises and sticks to conviction. Meticulous to detail, richly photographed and lavishly mounted this is a piece of work that not only is a feast to the eye but tugs at your heart strings and does it rather painfully. Varun (Ranveer Singh) and Palkhi's (Sonakshi Sinha) love story is touching, poignant and heart breaking and as good as it gets for any romantic. Sonakshi and Ranveer carry their roles extremely well, particularly Sonakshi as the mischievous and spoiled Palkhi who's world turns upside after she falls in love with the mysterious Varun. The cinematography is sheer poetry with the 1950s sets painstakingly created to such authentic detail. The whole idea behind the film seems to have germinated from O Henry's short story "The Last Leaf" whose story however only takes up the last act.
No review of Lootera is complete without mention of its music. After Udaan, Vikram Motwane again teams up with Amit Trivedi and gives probably the best score of year. Each and every song are gem and the album has soo much heart and surely lot of shelf life.

I had loved first season of The Newsroom. Infact it was one of the best political TV series that I had seen by then. First season was sharp, edgy, Political and yet very very entertaining. Wish I could say same about season 2. Although the makers are still the same and its been written by my favorite writer, Aroon Sorkin, I am afraid to say, the second season is a letdown. The season has a continuous plot of a secret operation named Geneoa , which even after intensive research, the journalist team gets it wrong.

Kick-Ass 2

*ing : Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey
Director : Jeff Wadlow

Tagline : You Can't Fight Your Destiny.

I liked the original "Kick-Ass" which was both a fresh idea and had a good portion of innocent fun and good humor. Sadly I have to say that the franchise can be announced dead and buried.

The writer of "Kick-Ass 2" has completely misunderstood the idea behind the original film, and has written a sequel which has lots of troubles. It's lame, boring, violent, childish, bloody, gory, foul-mouthed, stupid and too long.

I'll still honor the idea behind the first, but already in the trailer we could see that this second outing had completely missed the mark, also when it comes to the humor. Watch the two trailers, and you'll easily see what I mean. I was expecting this to be nothing like the first, but I didn't expect it to be that bad.

I actually really understand why Jim Carrey has refused to promote this film, after he saw the result. I originally thought that sounded stupid, but oh boy was he right! This is how NOT to make a sequel!

Director : Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen

Tagline : Nothing ruins a party like the end of the world.

This movie simply wasn't funny. It dragged on interminably; scenes with little comedic value got dragged out for far too long presumably because the directors (and main featured actors) were too high while making this steaming pile of wasted time.

We get it. You like to do drugs and are generally wastes of humanity and oxygen on this planet. This movie isn't funny though. There have been many funny drug movies made, and made by funny people on drugs. This movie is a nauseating bromantic drama pretending to be a comedy. I expected the two main characters to start making out at the end. Not that there would be anything intrinsically wrong with that, in fact it would've been cathartic since they so obviously were in love with each other.

The two funniest actors in the movie, Ansari and Cera, die within the first ten minutes and all you're left with is a weak cast and weaker script.

Yeh Jawani hai Deewani

*ing: Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor
Director : Ayan Mukharjee

Tagline :

Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani is a refreshing take on the lives of the youth(of varied types)-their needs, their aspirations, their madness. Inspite of being 3+ hours,it never felt like a long film. It is a movie with a lot of flair, adventure and madness, as you would expect from the title.

The acting cast is mouth-watering. Ranbir Kapoor as Bunny is brilliant. He plays a character who loves to have all the fun, wants to live life at a fast pace and has this quirky ambition of visiting all the beautiful places in the world. Good job Ranbir, great acting skills and mind-blowing dancing skills that is always fun viewing. Deepike Padukone as Naina shines as an actor and shows she is more than just good looks with a beautiful rendition of a nerdy girl who is looking to break all inhibitions. I think she captured a studious, unsatisfied and conflicted girl perfectly. Kalki as Aditi exceeded my expectations. It was a treat watching Aditya Roy Kapoor who always lit up the screen whenever he was present.

The dialogues are crisp and some of them pretty deep and well thought. The music and the songs stand apart. I actually felt like getting up and dancing to the tunes of 'Balam Pichkari' and 'Badtameez Dil'. The costumes are good as well. Ayan Mukherjee seems spot on in his direction and execution as well as in the selection of the cast.

What is good about this movie is that the approach to many things is fresh and is no cliché(The ending is kinda inescapable though). The plot seems perfectly plausible. Bunny does not fall head over heels in love with Naina. They pretty much get back to their lives without any drama. It is circumstances that later makes things happen.

' Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani' is definitely good entertainment overall. An enjoyable experience.

Director : Chan-wook Park

Tagline : Do not disturb the family.

I couldn't recommend this film to anyone. It's a shame because I wanted to like it. The cinematography was beautiful and the opening scene was intriguing but it went downhill rapidly and stayed there. It wont appeal to horror or suspense fans because there isn't any. Fans of good drama can look elsewhere as there's none of that either. And no action, awesome scenes of violence or even romance. So.... who exactly is liking this mess is beyond me.
All of the characters, apart from the one played by Jackie - are bland tho slightly irritating and have nothing about them to like or relate to. I couldn't raise any interest in any of their fates.

In summary, the whole film is tedious and boring. Really.... really ... astoundingly boring.

The director has a great reputation and some of his work is fantastic. I think that's really the only reason people are praising this stinker. It's like the emperor's new clothes - everyone feels obliged to pretend it's awesome when really its clearly just a boring trite film about nothing.

Hollywood Ending

*ing : Woody Allen, Téa Leoni, Bob Dorian
Director : Woody Allen

Tagline : It's Going to be a Shot in the Dark!

This offering isn't as bad as reviews had suggested. But I would only recommend it to the diehard Woody Allen fan. No one does Woody's material as well as he and his material is really quite amusing. OK so the May-November relationships are getting a bit But his personal life aside, this has some funny stuff. He rants, he obsesses, he stammers, but Woody still delivers. Wait, that's what he does!

Tea Leoni is one of his strongest leads of late who stands up quite well to his challenge and succeeds. Debra Messing serves up the classic bimbo. (don't we get the joke?) George Hamilton was actually entertaining and well cast as the Hollywood stooge and Treat Williams was exceptional.

The Woody Allen-esque metaphors are overly evident, and I found myself being able to spot the lines or phrases that would tie back in. Usually, he is much more subtle about his themes.

Not as many laughs, but enough to keep u entertained for runtime.

In the 2008 presidential campaign, Sarah Palin became one of the most hated women in America. And I never could quite put it together. Sure she said some stupid things, but I guess I didn't really know much about her. Nobody really did. But as the years went on, I found out more about her, and as it turns out she put her friends in charge of staff in Alaska, and in Game Change, the new HBO film from director Jay Roach, it brings out a side to Palin that we never really saw.

That's basically the premise of the film. It takes us behind the scenes of Sarah Palin, and the 2008 election, while tying in events that actually occurred. Is the whole film based on fact? I don't know. But if that's the case, they did a hell of a job with it.

Julianne Moore is Palin, Ed Harris is John McCain, the presidential candidate, and Woody Harrelson is Steve Schmidt, McCains executive who discovers Palin and believes that she will win over women voters around the world.

The three are magical here, especially Moore, who definitely sinks into Sarah Palin. She talks, walks, and even looks like her. What works about Game Change is those performances. Hell, most of the film works. It really showed me just WHO and WHY Sarah Palin is..watch if you are interested in America and its Election system.

The Place Beyond the Pines

*ing : Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes
Director : Derek Cianfrance

Tagline : One moment can change your life.

The synopsis for this movie sounds so much more interesting than it actually is. There were no redeeming characters, no one was conflicted over anything, no one wanted to achieve anything in particular. There was no great passion, no inner turmoil, no big lesson to be learned, not much of anything at all. I'm not dense, and I do enjoy subtlety in a movie, but unfortunately this movie only hinted at possible conflicts that never actually made it to screen.

The motorcycle rider quits his job when he learns that he has a kid. It's not a job he loves (but it could have been) and he doesn't particularly care about the girl (though it would have been more interesting if he did); she was just a one night stand from a year or two earlier and he never bothered to call her again. Had he been desperately looking for work, and finally resorted to robbing banks, it might have been interesting, but no, he robbed banks as a first resort and without great passion. Had the woman and her child been destitute, had they been victims of domestic violence, then you might have understood his desire to help them, but no, he just wanted to give them money (which they didn't particularly need).

Had the cop been tortured by the fact that he lied about the shooting, had he been wanting to tell the truth but was conflicted; had he some inner demon sabotaging him throughout his life, then his story might have carried some weight, but no, he lived a normal life and advanced his career as one might do.

Had the motorcycle rider's son been desperately seeking a father figure his whole life, then his discovery of the identity of the cop would have been dramatic, but no, he had a normal life with a loving step-father, and so the discovery was no big deal. But assuming it was a big deal (a very big assumption) you might have expected him to exact revenge with some clever plot, but no, he simply threatens to kill the guy (for no apparent reason) and then changes his mind at the last minute…of course.

They missed the dramatic mark in every possible way. It was lazy writing to say the least. A movie has to actually create conflict and motivation, it can't leave it up to the audience to assume that people are conflicted, or that something matters to them. I think anyone who gave it a good review must have read way more into the movie than was actually there.

With advance technologies and internet awareness, teenagers of next generation have turned matured-much-before-their-age. Many movies like hilarious Rockford , solid father-son drama Udaan or the recent fun-loving Gippi focuses on the school life, friends, love , education , crushes etc. Sixteen goes one step ahead and dwells with issues teenagers are facing now days only if it could have been handled sensitively.

Sixteen tells the coming-of-age story of 4 friends - Tanisha who is love with a guy twice her age because she is unable to find right guy of her age , Anu wants to loose her virginity to her careless good-for-nothing boyfriend, Nidhi is bold and beautiful who wants to make it big to the modelling world and Ashwin who is dominated by his father to become an IAS officer.

Sixteen is a brave attempt by the first time director Raj Purohit and concept is handled with aplomb. However , it is the writing and editing that falters and at time , you will feel like being dragged along. Screenplay is loose which makes it worst. Despite these shortcomings , Sixxteen is supported by some some good acting by all 4 leading protagonist.

Overall , Sixteen is genuine attempt which could be watched once. They shud hv marketed the film better.

In Indian filmmaker Mira Nair's (Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) latest film there are no easy answers to very complex issues, and I thought it was hard to find many likable characters as well. At times, I found myself getting annoyed, if not aggravated, at the simplistic stereotypes portrayed about America. There are some truths in these stereotypes, as with any others, but I felt the whole picture was not thoroughly examined and presented. Therefore, I often felt manipulated by half-truths and contrivances.

The main story revolves around a Pakistani professor Changez Khan, ably portrayed by the British actor Riz Ahmed, who is being interviewed by a reporter Bobby Lincoln, played by the fine actor Liev Schreiber, in a Lahore, Pakistan restaurant, in 2011. Bobby, who is a CIA operative and is wired by the agency, wants information from Changez on the whereabouts of a recently kidnapped American Professor off the streets of Lahore.

However, Changez is more interested in telling Bobby his history in America from 10 years before. He relates an amazing story of coming to the United Staes when he was eighteen years old, graduating with very high honors at Princeton, and then being hired by one of the most prestigious Wall Street firms Underwood Samson. He tells how his boss and mentor Jim Cross (Kiefer Sutherland) recognized his brilliant ability to quickly analyze financial information and draw accurate conclusions. Also, how began a relationship with the top executives' niece Erica (Kate Hudson), who was still in mourning for the loss of her longtime boyfriend in a car accident where she was driving.

Changez was certainly on the fast track to corporate success. However, then the attacks of 9/11 came and Changez relates to Bobby how he was increasingly harassed by Americans and various police and government agencies. I found this part of the film if not very far fetched, then ridiculously contrived. I'm not saying these type of incidents have not occurred but the way they were depicted I thought was manipulative. Anyway, these incidents changed Changez quite radically but his actual views on America are never really clearly depicted in the film, in my opinion.

As Changez talks to Bobby, student demonstrations are breaking out in the streets below and the CIA fearing for Bobby's safety wants to raid the restaurant to extricate him. It all spins into a some dramatic violence.

When the movie ended, I felt other than incriminate America for its' arrogance, what else was really presented to the viewer clearly? These are, as mentioned, complex issues and although I have very much liked Nair's work in the past I felt this was not a fair presentation of these issues in the film.

Lost (Season 3)

*ing : Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Evangeline Lilly, Evangeline Lilly, Naveen Andrews, Josh Holloway, Terry O'Quinn
Created by :J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber, Damon Lindelof

Tagline : On this island, survival is not a game

Lost has been on my watchlist for a long time. Even though its not lived upto the expectations, I will continue to watch coz there is something about the show which is alluring. The plot is intriguing and things happening on the island are interesting, often baffling too. The synopsis of the show itself is quite interesting. A plane crashing on mysterious island with group of survivors trying to unravel the mystery.
There is a lot more in the show than just this. Too many characters, too plots. It all is confusing yet, its presented in commendable way.
Lets hope it ends well.

Coupling (season 3)

*ing : Jack Davenport, Gina Bellman, Sarah Alexander
Created by : Steven Moffat

Tagline : The naughty new comedy about nothing...but SEX!

I don’t hv much to add from what I did last 2 times I reviewed the show. It’s a british show (accent helps) abt 6 friends (like american show Friends) who wants nothing bt sex. There are certain relationship issues bt they are mostly related to sex only. A few episodes are mildly funny, rest are just Okayish. Nothing special.
